Poor quality materials: problem fixed at Institut Uzima thanks to citizen monitoring
At Institut Uzima (Bagira, Bukavu, Sud-Kivu), the Integrity Club reported on EduCheck: poor quality materials. Within 59 days and through « Advocacy », the project fixed the problem.
The « Latrines séparées filles / garçons » project is meant to improve Institut Uzima (Bagira, Bukavu, Sud-Kivu). Student monitors of the school’s Integrity Club, trained by the Anti-Corruption Research Centre (CERC), follow the works with the EduCheck questionnaire to check that what was promised is delivered.
The problem
On 11 December 2025, the Integrity Club reported the following problem at Institut Uzima: poor quality materials.
A badly built structure endangers those who will use it and wastes public money.
The problem was published on the school’s page and sent to the project management committee and the contractor.
The dialogue
The monitors opened a dialogue with the project management committee and the contractor:
- Advocacy
The result
The fix was recorded on 8 February 2026, 59 days after the report.
The monitors will check the fix during their next visit; the problem will then move to « Verified ».
This success shows what citizen monitoring makes possible: a problem made visible, a dialogue with the right people and a verified solution, for the benefit of pupils.
Your school can change too
Students, parents and teachers trained by CERC monitor their school and talk with those in charge until problems are fixed.
