EduCheck at a glance
Citizen monitoring of schools in the DRC
EduCheck lets students, parents and community members monitor the quality of their schools and school infrastructure in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Monitors visit schools with a shared questionnaire. Every problem found is published, sent to the school administration and verified on site once fixed.
Diagnosis & context
The education challenge in the DRC
In many schools, failures remain invisible to decision-makers because there is no channel for verified information from the field.
Overcrowded classrooms without furniture
Pupils sitting on the floor, a chronic lack of desks and watertight roofs, causing systematic interruptions in the rainy seasons.
Lack of water and sanitation
No decent or separate latrines for girls, causing high absenteeism among girls and worrying hygiene risks.
Lack of teaching materials
Extreme shortage of official textbooks (1 textbook for 8 pupils), empty or outdated science laboratories.
Untracked absenteeism
Lost teaching hours never made up, no reporting mechanism for parents and student committees.
School safety & fences
Unfenced schools exposing children to road traffic and uncontrolled intrusions.
Exclusion of vulnerable groups
No infrastructure adapted to pupils with physical or visual disabilities, limiting their right to education.
Our response
Integrity Clubs in the field
Monitors are students, parents and community members organised in Integrity Clubs. Trained by CERC, they observe, document and talk with school officials so that problems get solved.
Transparency
Problems, fixes and figures are public and downloadable.
Protecting monitors
Their names are never published; only their role is shown.
Dialogue
The aim is a solution, not a sanction.
Verification
A fix only counts once confirmed on site.
