Classrooms too small for the number of students: problem fixed at Institut Tumaini Jipya thanks to citizen monitoring
At Institut Tumaini Jipya (Ibanda, Bukavu, Sud-Kivu), the Integrity Club reported on EduCheck: classrooms too small for the number of students. Within 89 days and through « Funding from an external partner », the school fixed the problem.
Institut Tumaini Jipya welcomes its pupils every day in Ibanda (Sud-Kivu). Like other schools followed by EduCheck, it has an Integrity Club: student monitors trained by the Anti-Corruption Research Centre (CERC) to observe their school with a shared questionnaire, report problems on EduCheck and talk with those in charge until they are solved.
The problem
On 7 November 2025, the Integrity Club reported the following problem at Institut Tumaini Jipya: classrooms too small for the number of students.
Classrooms that are too small, dark or run-down keep pupils from learning in good conditions.
The problem was published on the school’s page and sent to the school management.
The dialogue
The monitors opened a dialogue with the school management:
- Funding from an external partner
The result
The fix was recorded on 4 February 2026, 89 days after the report.
The monitors will check the fix during their next visit; the problem will then move to « Verified ».
This success shows what citizen monitoring makes possible: a problem made visible, a dialogue with the right people and a verified solution, for the benefit of pupils.
Your school can change too
Students, parents and teachers trained by CERC monitor their school and talk with those in charge until problems are fixed.
